This semester’s brief explores the dynamics of housing and workspace competing for land in the gentrifying East London, looking back to the roots of this tension in the industrial city and formulating fresh questions on the subject, in the light of the current crisis.
The main exercise is the re-use of an industrial site in Hackney, comprised of a spatially rich amalgam of manufacturing and warehouse buildings dating from 1913 and a former Victorian church hall from 1887, which most recently served as a mechanical engineering workshop.
This light industrial medley, fallen into disuse since the late 90’, is immersed in the leafy back gardens of De Beauvoir Conservation Area, a 19th century residential development with a strong eclectic character, notable for the survival of high quality short terraces and houses in Italianate style.
The existing industrial structures shall be transformed into a mixed use scheme consisting of residential units, work and community spaces. The design studio will also focus on creating connections with the historical context and explore opportunities for the surrounding urban fabric.
The project will be carried out in small groups of 2-3 students, with concise individual assignments.
